Nourish. Restore. Repeat.

We have met another kindred spirit who firmly believes that health and wellness should be approached from a holistic angle to properly nourish our overall well-being.  Meet Tricia Williams. Tricia’s passion is her mission – to help people eat better and feel better. Tricia is the Founder and CEO of Daily Dose and Food Matters NYC, organic, balanced, ready-to-eat meal delivery services. She is an executive chef, a holistic nutritionist and a farm to table enthusiast. Her culinary approach is inventive, delicious and thoughtful. Her recipe ideas take into account the lives of everyday families. We sat down with Tricia to hear more about the evolution of her businesses and her own personal approach to a healthy lifestyle.

Food + Mood NYC: Can you explain the story of how and why you started Food Matters NYC?

Tricia Williams: I was pregnant with my first child and I read a Michael Pollan book that changed my life forever … The Omnivore’s Dilemma. It sent me on my path from being a restaurant chef to studying holistic nutrition and receiving various certifications. I put my passion for cooking with my knowledge of nutrition to form Foods Matters NYC. We believe in organic foods, pasture raised meats and wild seafood. We look to the culinary wisdom of traditional cultures to find inspiration.

F+M NYC: Food Matters NYC creates customized meals plans for your clients. What steps do you take to determine what is right for each individual?

TM: We look at a client’s health history and health goals, their activity level as well as their sleep and meditation practice. We offer to partner with a client’s wellness team, be it a functional medicine doctor, nutritionist, trainer, etc. We also look at a person’s food preferences healthy or not. One of your favorite things to do is to recreate a client’s favorite indulgence in a healthful way.

F+M NYC: You recently launched Daily Dose. Can you please tell us about this newest undertaking?

TM: Daily Dose has the same nutritional principles as Food Matters without the customization. It is an affordable and flexible subscription based model. Our tag line is no gluten, no dairy, no sugar, no problems! We offer a variety of programs. We have a Skinny Body program that’s grain free, a Keto Body Program that is 70% fat, 20% protein and 10% carbs. We are moving fast with our corporate wellness initiative called Office Fuel. We encourage corporations to stock their pantries with our workday performance smoothies and our functional food bars as well as getting a healthy lunch delivered daily to the office.

F+M NYC: You love a challenge! Can you recall a culinary challenge you took on and tackled?

TM: Ahh, Wendy’s Chocolate Frosty Junk Food Makeover.  Bon Appétit challenged me to recreate the iconic Wendy’s Frosty drink in a healthy version. I was fully expecting the Wendy’s Frosty to taste like some frozen chemical slush, but was surprised at how delicious it was. Sugar makes anything addictive! But if you read the calories on the menu, it should deter you from ordering one (420 calories and 58 grams of sugar according to Wendy’s website). It has a frozen hot chocolate-like taste, so we decided to go with raw cocoa powder to mimic its flavor while getting the full nutritional benefit that chocolate has to offer when it’s unprocessed. For sweetness, we used coconut nectar, because it has a really mild taste. Raw coconut isn’t just a good sweetener, it’s also a go-to superfood–It’s full of minerals, electrolytes, healthy fats, and has anti-microbial properties. Also–the shake we made has no dairy. It’s totally vegan. You can find the recipe HERE.

F+M NYC: Besides your own business being focused on health and wellness, how do you take care of yourself on and off the plate?

TM: Here’s my day when it all goes according to plan. I wake up at 5:30 each morning and do an Abraham Hick’s Meditation. After getting the kids out the door, I usually go for a run around the river and then hot yoga or HIIT training. Breakfast for me doesn’t start till 11:30 and is usually something from my kitchen. Lunch is too. Dinner is almost always around the family dinner table. This connection and exchange of our day is the most nourishing for me!
