Back to the Basics

Good ole fashioned real food is making a comeback! And thank goodness – eating real food means no more searching for special diet foods and drinks that are processed and altered from their original, intended state.  Instead, we should be looking for healthy fats and oils found in organic meats, fish, vegetables, fruits and grains to keep us healthy and happy.

My mother, Sheila Lukins, was a chef and cookbook author most well-known for her Silver Palate cookbooks.  She took real and healthy foods and combined them in new and innovative ways to make truly delicious meals.  And this was New York City in the 1970s, when “gourmet” and “healthy” were not usually found in the same sentence.  Her most memorable dish is still a staple in homes today, Chicken Marbella, from her first book The Silver Palate Cookbook. Here is a recipe that embodies real food + creativity and imagination. An unlikely coupling of ingredients that work so well together.

Fast forward 40 years, and New York City is now bursting at the seams with healthy + delicious food options.  With spring here and summer around the corner, it is prime time to seek out nutritious and thoughtful places and reap the benefits of clean, healthy eating.

This is where Food + Mood NYC comes in! We are here to show you where to shop and dine. We are here to show you what to choose and how to eat in a way that benefits you. This isn’t rocket science, but it is overwhelming and each person has individual needs. We find what is right for you.

To kick off our first blog, I wanted to pay homage to my mom and her vision. We are here to support it and to celebrate it and to encourage you to follow it as we do in our everyday lives. We are here to guide you along the way.

Let’s do this!
